Hi AK... This depends on what passports you hold - if European, no problem. If you have a foreign passport with a visa for Spain, also no problem.
However, should you hold a visa for another country, this may be difficult. If visiting a country in Europe on a visa I would recommend obtaining a Schengen Visa. The Schengen Visa allows you to travel to all the European countries signed up to the Schengen Agreement, without you having to obtain visas for each country. The following countries are included:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden.

I checked on the net and apparently US passport holders don't need a visa for Spain:

Might be worth double checking with a Spanish consulate near you though. 14 hours in Madrid airport! Yuk... my longest was 5 hours and that was too much!

You are living in a pretty much all Spanish area. :o) I would recommend visiting your town hall or Casa de Cultura to enquire about the Spanish courses that they offer.
What is also an idea is to first of all concentrate on Spanish for individual circumstances... for e.g. I developed my "supermarket Spanish", "coffee bar Spanish" etc. first, so that I could manage in those environments first of all, then broadened from there.
But the main thing is to learn the language - at first always apologise and say that you only speak a little Spanish - this will tend to slow their speech down a bit! :o)

Hi Anne,
REturning to Spain for first time since college year abroad almost 20 years ago (stayed in Madrid). Bringing 1.5 year old, 14 year old, along with my husband, and have approximately 16 days. Will spend first 2-3 in Madrid getting reacquainted with language. Any tips on ways to travel and special locales after that (given the 1.5 year old will be with us)? Am thinking of Toleda and Jerez (for 14 year old and husband), but would also like to go to Seville. Did I also mention we're on a bit of a budget and would like to take trains vs. Drive?

THe main thing I'd like to say about traveling for 14 days and taking the train is to not take a large suitcase. My family of 4 was just in Spain for 14 days and we took trains just about everywhere except down in the costa del sol area where we drove. The train are always full of baggage and it is very combersome to tote large luggage. Unless you plan to just move a couple or maybe three times during the two weeks and use 2-3 places as your base, I would recommend using a travel group such as Trafalgar as they take care of all luggage. I would stay in Madrid at least 4 nights and go to Toledo and Cordoba from there. Then spend 4 nights in Sevilla or Coast area and then 4 nights in Barcelona if you want to travel that much. We drove thru the costa del sol but definitely take a GPS. You will get lost without it. Roads are good for driving. Ronda is great.
